Word Starts Producing Dumb, "Resting on the line" double quote marks.

It sounds like your document's language or autocorrect settings might be causing the issue with quotation marks. Here are a few steps to help you revert to normal upper double quotation marks:

  1. Check the Language Settings:

    • Go to the Review tab in Word.
    • Click on Language and then Set Proofing Language.
    • Make sure the language is set to English (United States) or another variant that uses standard quotation marks.
    • NOTE:  YES, MY "PROOFING LANGUAGE" MYSTERIOUS BECAME FRENCH
  2. Disable AutoFormat for Smart Quotes:

    • Go to the File tab and select Options.
    • In the Word Options dialog box, select Proofing from the list on the left.
    • Click on AutoCorrect Options....
    • Go to the AutoFormat As You Type tab.
    • Uncheck the box that says “Replace as you type” for "Straight quotes" with “smart quotes.”
    • Also, do the same under the AutoFormat tab for consistency.
  3. Replace All Lower Double Marks:

    • If the incorrect quotation marks are already in the document, you can use the Find and Replace feature to replace them:
      • Press Ctrl + H to open the Find and Replace dialog box.
      • In the "Find what" field, type the incorrect quotation mark (« or »).
      • In the "Replace with" field, type the correct quotation mark (" or ").
      • Click Replace All.

These steps should restore the normal upper double quotation marks. Let me know if you need further assistance!
